Douliu City Lantern Festival in 2025

The buildings on Taiping Old Street were constructed during three periods of the Japanese era: Meiji, Taisho, and Showa. They feature Baroque-style architecture and have stood for nearly a century. Each building is two stories high, with intricately decorated facades on the second floor, adorned with exquisite carvings of dragons, phoenixes, and other vivid motifs. Some buildings even have the residents’ surnames engraved on them, symbolizing both the virtue of remembering one's roots and the prestige of prominent families.
The historic Taiping Old Street lanterns have become a popular attraction in Douliu City during the festive season. Visitors flock to the street year-round, drawn by its enchanting lantern displays. To enhance this tradition, the Lantern Festival is held on the eve of the Chinese Lantern Festival, blending the charm of Japanese-style architecture with a modern lighting spectacle. This event aims to attract more tourists to Taiping Old Street, allowing them to experience the festive atmosphere, enjoy performances by popular bands, and explore local vendor stalls. By increasing visibility and integrating local culture with tourism, the festival also stimulates the surrounding business district and boosts economic opportunities.
