The 2024 Chiayi Flower Festival envisions a fusion of urban flower fields and everyday citizen life. Transforming fallow farmland at the end of Yushan Road into a vast sea of flowers, the design sought to reconnect residents with nature within familiar city streets, creating a healing atmosphere in winter. Through the interwoven themes of “flowers, art, and music,” the festival redefined the flower field as a shared living scene—at once a practice of environmental education and a stage for civic culture and emotion.
The exhibition expanded in scale from 18 to 27 hectares, offering richer highlights. By day, citizens strolled among colorful flower fields of cosmos, zinnias, and sunflowers, complemented by interactive art installations that provided ideal photo backdrops for social media. Thoughtful “social media tag gifts,” such as fans and phone straps, enhanced the interactive experience. For the first time, the event extended into the evening with a “Starry Sky Cinema,” where visitors could bring picnic mats or camping chairs to enjoy films amid flowers and starlight—creating a new romantic highlight.
Because the main exhibition fell in December, winter conditions posed challenges for seeding and bloom timing. Careful calibration of soil moisture and nutrients across zones ensured peak flowering during the event. In addition, a market of one hundred stalls showcased local ingredients, food trucks, and artisans, embedding sustainable practices like reduced plastic use and reusable containers into the daily festival experience.
