Blue Carbon Micro-Ecosystems is a groundbreaking sustainability education program designed to bring climate science, ecological literacy, and hands-on learning to underserved rural schools in Tainan, Taiwan. Supported by the National Science and Technology Council, Taiwan (NSTC) and endorsed by the United Nations University – Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability / International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (UNU-IAS/IPSI), the project transforms complex global issues into meaningful, tactile learning experiences.
At the heart of the program is the DIY “Blue Carbon Eco-Jar”, a miniature self-sustaining ecosystem built by children using aquatic plants, water fleas, and natural microorganisms. Through observation and experimentation, students learn how carbon cycles through ecosystems, how photosynthesis produces oxygen, and why blue carbon systems, such as mangroves and seagrass meadows, are critical to global climate resilience.
The project addresses educational inequality by providing high-quality science outreach to schools with limited access to resources in remote areas. By engaging 388 rural students and 52 teachers across the river-north region of Tainan, it bridges the gap between global climate strategies and local learning.
This initiative empowers children to see themselves as part of the planet’s climate solution—turning a small glass jar into a window toward a sustainable future, and demonstrating how local landscapes connect to global ecological wellbeing.
