Formosa North Coast Arts Festival 2025

The inspiration for 2025 originated from the large quantities of driftwood accumulated along the coastline after typhoons and heavy rainfall. Materials that would normally be treated as environmental burdens requiring removal were reimagined as creative resources capable of being renamed and reinterpreted through artistic expression.
The curatorial framework first established driftwood as the shared material, while leaving the question of “how to narrate it” open for artists to freely interpret. The festival invited 14 contemporary artists and 4 local co-creation teams to work with wood-based materials. Each artwork extends multiple narratives at the intersection of nature and humanity, derived from the paths of drifting, the places where the wood comes to rest, and the moments in which it is encountered and seen.
The theme, “Legends of Driftwood: Art, Nature and the Stories of the Sea,” offers a more focused and recognizable viewing experience.
First, one of the main exhibition venues was brought into the Juming Museum Park, allowing audiences to spend longer, more concentrated periods engaging with the artworks. This addressed the limitations of previous route-based exhibitions, where it was difficult to identify visitors who came specifically for the art, and also enabled clearer visitation nodes through nighttime openings and guided tours within the park.
Second, at Baishawan Recreation Area in Shimen, large-scale land art installations were positioned directly against the mountain-and-sea landscape. The scale of the works stands alongside sea winds and waves, enabling viewers to directly perceive the origin, weight, and presence of the materials within the natural environment.
Third, installations at bus stops and along transit routes continued the festival’s strength as a mobile exhibition, allowing the public to embark on an art journey simply by boarding a bus.
Fourth, local collaboration was deepened by shifting from isolated partnerships to a model of regional curation. Collaborations with North Coast-based teams such as Lang Jinshan, Zilong Mountain Studio, and Shikaofang Space led to the development of walking tours, guided visits, and workshops. Through this approach, art is not only displayed, but also guided by local knowledge, allowing it to take root within regional narratives.
