Where Water Shapes Life presents a community-led eco-cultural journey in Nanpu Village, one of Hsinchu County’s Golden Rural Communities in Taiwan. The project centers on a century-old irrigation waterway that functions as a living ecological corridor, supporting biodiversity, sustaining agricultural landscapes, and shaping long-term human settlement.
Rather than treating nature as a backdrop for tourism, the film reframes travel as a means of environmental education and conservation. Through guided routes designed and led by local residents, the project reveals how water systems regulate ecosystems, connect farmland with surrounding habitats, and embody accumulated ecological knowledge passed down through generations.
Developed as part of a county-level sustainability initiative, the project highlights community stewardship as a key driver of environmental resilience. Residents actively monitor landscapes, share ecological observations, and integrate cultural practices—such as local Earth God (Bok Kung) beliefs—into contemporary conservation efforts. These practices help ensure that human activity remains aligned with the carrying capacity of the environment.
By positioning water as both a natural system and a cultural foundation, Where Water Shapes Life demonstrates a sustainable model for rural development. It shows how environmental conservation, cultural continuity, and low-impact visitation can coexist, offering a replicable approach for communities seeking to protect ecological systems while sustaining local life.
