About The Entry

The Panacea is a narrative-driven interactive game that explores the complex relationship between humans, wildlife exploitation, and ecological consequences. Told from a first-person perspective, the story follows the player character who, under the request of an elderly man suffering from a mysterious illness, embarks on a journey to capture pangolins and produce a so-called “panacea.” Through this process, the game gradually reveals a series of intertwined issues, including the hunting of pangolins, misconceptions surrounding their medicinal value, environmental pollution, invasive species, and the ethical dilemmas of artificial breeding.
The core concept of the game draws inspiration from a real cultural phenomenon—the use of pangolin scales in traditional medicine. Building upon this reality, the project introduces a fictional illness called “scale disease,” which functions as a metaphor for humanity’s desire to exploit nature. The player’s objective is to create the “ultimate medicine” using pangolin scales, yet the outcome exposes the futility of this pursuit: the medicine fails, the old man dies, and the protagonist begins to develop scales as well. This symbolic ending suggests that greed itself is the true disease. By presenting these ideas through gameplay rather than direct moral instruction, the project avoids a didactic tone while encouraging players to reflect critically on their actions.
Visually, the game adopts a collage-style illustration aesthetic, creating a surreal and unsettling atmosphere that reinforces the narrative’s psychological tension. The 2D first-person interface immerses players in confined spaces filled with symbolic objects and fragmented imagery, strengthening the sense of unease.
Gameplay mechanics revolve around puzzle-based interactions that allow players to progress through the narrative. Activities such as grinding medicinal pills, preparing herbal ingredients, unlocking rooms, feeding pangolins, and extracting biological materials gradually unfold the storyline. These interactions place players in morally ambiguous roles, guiding them through a sequence that shifts from apparent care to exploitation and harm.
Beyond entertainment, The Panacea raises awareness about the survival crisis faced by pangolins by exposing the mythologizing of their medicinal value and highlighting issues such as illegal wildlife trade, environmental degradation, and failed breeding programs.
