About The Entry

The Origin and Inheritance of Chinese Characters is a design project that explores the cultural lineage of Chinese writing through a contemporary visual language. Centered on the theme of the origin and transmission of Chinese characters, the work traces key milestones in the evolution of the script and reinterprets the aesthetic value of Chinese typography through modern design methods.
The project constructs its narrative around the historical development of Chinese characters, transforming three significant moments in Chinese civilization into symbolic visual elements: the legend of Cangjie creating characters, Cai Lun’s invention of papermaking, and Bi Sheng’s movable-type printing. Rather than focusing solely on the formal design of characters, the work abstracts and condenses the technological history of Chinese civilization. Through graphic reconstruction, it breaks away from the conventional rigidity of traditional fonts and injects stronger storytelling and forward-looking cultural meaning into Chinese character design.
Visually, the project combines ink-inspired black and gray tones with bronze-pattern textures, creating a sense of historical depth and cultural gravity. The character structures are carefully composed, balancing clarity with ornamentation. Ancient script aesthetics—such as the simplicity and expressive lines of early Chinese writing—are integrated with modern layout design principles, forming a visual language that bridges tradition and modernity.
The design also emphasizes adaptability across practical applications. The visual system has been successfully applied to multiple formats, including book design and tote bags, allowing the project to function both as a cultural exhibition piece and as a design solution for everyday objects. Through these applications, the work connects historical culture with contemporary life.
At its core, the project demonstrates how design can serve as a medium for cultural continuity. By revitalizing the visual identity of Chinese characters through modern design thinking, it strengthens cultural recognition while expressing a broader sense of cultural confidence in the present era.
