Embodied Viewing: An Immersive Extension for Cooper Hewitt

This project reimagines the traditional museum extension by transforming static display into an immersive, embodied experience. At the Cooper Hewitt Museum, conventional exhibition methods often confine objects within vitrines, limiting both physical interaction and interpretive engagement. This proposal challenges that paradigm by introducing a spatial system that encourages dynamic viewing, movement, and interaction.
The design operates as a layered, cloud-like structure hovering above the historic Carnegie Mansion, simultaneously acting as an architectural intervention and an experiential framework. Objects are no longer passively observed but are encountered through multiple perspectives—overhead, within circulation paths, and as part of narrative sequences—fostering a deeper bodily relationship between visitors, artifacts, and space.
By dissolving boundaries between viewer and exhibit, the project reframes the museum as an active environment for exploration, collaboration, and personal interpretation. This approach not only expands curatorial possibilities but also redefines the role of architecture as a medium for immersive storytelling and collective learning.
