The ultimate goal of the giraffe breeding program is really two-fold. Clearly the priority is growing our breeding herd both in size and genetic diversity so that we can contribute to the world population of this iconic species and become yet another safe guard preventing their extinction. Fortunately, this keystone species does provide yet another valuable quality and it is all due to its recognizability. Education and community outreach is big for us here at SWC, and due to their gentle nature and recognizability giraffes have an uncanny ability to bring people out to the property, get them outdoors, and make them start thinking about conservation. SWC houses 28 different threatened, endangered, or extinct in the wild species and our giraffes are the perfect ambassadors for those other species. By bringing people out to the property and getting them engaged, we can educate them to some of the other amazing animals’ struggles. Everyone that comes through the property, at one point or another, will have an interaction with a giraffe, and that makes them a very special asset to wildlife conservation.
