In a world that's increasingly globalized, yet feels more isolated than ever, Ghedh exists to bring us together.
For centuries, national anthems have been celebrated by countries around the world and taught to future generations with pride; but a closer look at their lyrics reveals gore and dark stories of war. Since these songs are so deeply engrained in society, we pass them on and sing along without questioning their meaning or impact — but change is past due. The rhetoric that a person's birthplace determines their "battle team" pitches humanity against each other and contributes to the rise of nationalist extremism and terrorism. When we define collective identity by the bloodstains of history, we glorify violence and motivate atrocity.
Ghedh incorporates the cultural significance of these traditions and changes the tune, refocusing collective identity on the strengths we contribute to humanity. By bringing together one peaceful line of lyrics from every national anthem, we created a new song: an international anthem that can be sung in every country to celebrate being human. Ghedh gives us a space to come together and share in the pride of one single, global community, appreciating each other as equals instead of enemies. As the voice of global innovation and connection, Google has the platform to bring this idea to reality and inspire millions across the world.
Ghedh is not just an international anthem; it's an international movement. Ghedh is named after the root word of "Togetherness," and to be quickly communicated across borders, its name is written as a universal symbol. This visual manifesto is easily recognizable and acts as a rally cry for a united world. Incorporated across Google platforms as a variable glyph, it can be typed in any font and read in any alphabet. This mobilizes a movement for peace that can extend past the anthem itself.
