In the past year, mental health has become more widely discussed, but there is still significant work to do when it comes to normalizing asking for help and encouraging candid conversations around mental health. Leading the way to increase access and destigmatize mental health is LifeStance Health (NASDAQ: LFST), one of the nation’s largest providers of virtual and in-person outpatient mental health care. Founded in 2017, the company has over 450 locations across 31 states and employs approximately 4,000 clinicians.
To reduce the stigma around seeking treatment, LifeStance Health launched its ”No Face” campaign in June 2021. LifeStance Health partnered with renowned photographer Mark Seliger to showcase people from diverse backgrounds and showcase the disparities between an individual's internal experience and external appearance. While depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or PTSD may be associated with stereotypical images, the truth is that these conditions have no one face--there are tens of millions of faces.
LifeStance also invited people to join the movement to destigmatize mental health by uploading a selfie on Instagram with the hashtag #Not1Face. For every post, the LifeStance Health Foundation committed to donating $5 to the Mental Health Coalition, up to $250,000. In July, the LifeStance Health Foundation donated the full $250,000.
Given that one of the most pervasive barriers preventing patients from seeking treatment today is the stigma associated with mental health care, one of the pillars of the ”No Face” campaign was to ensure that all people could have their unique experience represented. The campaign’s subjects represented diversity across family structures, ages, races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities and lived experiences, illustrating that there is no one face to mental health conditions--there are tens of millions of faces. The company’s associated social campaign also supported the broader push for destigmatization and challenged the taboo around opening up about mental health conditions.
The "No Face" campaign lives on LifeStance.com and LifeStance social media channels as well as media placements throughout 2021.
