This is the promotional poster design for Grand, Travelers, & Scrim Youth Theatre and Gaspipe Theatre Company's rendition of "The Elephant Man" by Bernard Pomerance.
Set in late 19th century London, John Merrick is horribly disfigured young man - due to suffering years of skin and bone diseases - who was the star attraction in travelling freak shows. He soon gets the chance to change the course of his life when he meets Dr. Frederick Treves, a well-known physician at the prestigious Whitechapel Hospital. The doctor introduces Merrick to everyday society and slowly evolves from an object of pity to an urbane and witty favorite of the aristocracy and literati. However, what Merrick really longs for is to be the man amongst any other.
The poster design is loosely based off of "freak show" circus posters in the 19th century.
Grand, Travelers, and Scrim Youth Theatre is an independent, volunteer-based, non-profit theater company that provides a safe and enriching environment for young children and teens to perform live theatre. For this performance, the company has partnered with Gaspipe Theatre Company, another non-profit theatre company open to older volunteer actors.
