Robitopia – the online game for elementary schools to boost kid’s confidence and interest in STEM-related fields.
In the game, children travel with the robot "Robi" by rocket to four fantasy planets. Embedded in an interesting storyline, kids meet STEM professionals, watch videos, read, solve puzzles, and earn stars & awards as incentives. Factors that can inhibit STEM interest were addressed in the game: STEM professions are represented by anti-stereotypical female protagonists. STEM self-awareness is strengthened through immediate feedback, among other things, and growth mindset & self-motivation are also fostered through play.
To measure the effects of the game scientifically, a field trial was conducted by the IHS at 40 Austrian elementary schools with the participation of 1,200 pupils. The study produced remarkable results:
Before using the online game "Robitopia", girls' interest in STEM was 20 percent lower than that of boys. After the children played the game, the results were markedly different. Girls' STEM interest was now significantly higher. The gender gap in STEM interest was reduced by 28% through Robitopia.
