Penghu International Lighting Art Festival

The Penghu International Lighting Art Festival originated from a curatorial concept of "Paying tribute to the ocean". Penghu is located in the Taiwan Strait, in the 16th century, the Portuguese came to this rich marine resources island and called "Pescadores", which means "Island of Fishermen". Hundreds of years later, the fishing culture still is primary goal for inheritance, it has continued to take fishery as the core of its economic system with the progress of the times, and with the joint efforts of the islanders, the protective attitude is keep maintains has not changed until now.
At the original design stage, the curator integrated a lot of feedbacks on Penghu’s cultural experience, those feedback experience was presented on various large-scale landscape works and lighting art which to transforming cultural experiences to visitors. All the works can have a dialogue with the island, by the exclusive theme of Penghu, to convey island unique trait on the public.
From October 2022 to February 2023, The theme of the exhibition was matched with different festivals of the presentation style, with a grand opening of opera in autumn, a Halloween themed light party at the end of October, with a sparkling Christmas tree for warmly bless in December, when the arrival of Chinese new year, present the traditional cultural works on the occasion to pray for all the wishes. This event not only received positive affirmation from islanders and tourists, but more importantly, after the exhibition, a lot of lighting works can be properly preserved in the exhibition area, so that islanders can still accompany these works day and night. At the same time, in order to obtain a better resting space, turning periodic festivals into a part of their daily life, it was also an artistic expression that pays homage to the life of the islanders, echoes the concept of environmental protection, appeal to people not to over exploit marine resources, this event also offers blessings to the future of Penghu, it can still become the most beautiful pearl in the ocean and shining forever.
