Since 1999, Sappi North America, Inc., a leading producer and supplier of diversified paper, packaging products and pulp, has hosted its Ideas that Matter (ITM) grant program. The program recognizes and supports designers from across the globe by providing funding to those who use their skills and expertise in print design to improve the lives of others worldwide. The program advocates for the ideas of great designers and uplifts their work that can change the world.
Designers submit ideas that include paper and packaging projects, as well as print and digital communications projects, that benefit their communities. New in 2022, entrants were asked to align their submissions with at least one of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals seek to end extreme poverty, reduce inequality and protect the planet, as well as take action to alleviate poverty and hunger. By aligning submissions with these SDGs, ITM initiatives drive change for critical social, environmental, healthcare and community issues and create a lasting impact.
For over 20 years, Ideas that Matter has been the only grant program of its kind in the paper industry. Sappi believes the creative ideas of designers can have an impact beyond the aesthetic and that those ideas can be a powerful force for social good. In restructuring the program to align with the UN’s SDGs, Sappi ensured the projects made a difference in the areas of greatest global need. By addressing social issues through design, Sappi welcomes innovative and creative ideas to drive positive impact in our communities.
