Behind The Seen is an AR exhibition about climate change that brings teenagers together to learn about the problem of climate change, grieve what has been lost, actively engage with solutions, and motivate everyone to join the fight for a brighter future together in an engaging way.
The entire exhibition contains two parts of experience: the regular physical part educates teenagers about climate change, and decarbonization via installation, data, images, and the AR part that teenagers use iPad to reveal provides an engaging way for them to understand what is happening behind the scene and how to fight against it through interactive augmented reality experience.
The spatial storytelling leverages the three rooms in the exhibition space to set up an educational frame that guides teenagers to learn about climate change and decarbonization. The first room introduces teenagers to the current climate situation and how it impacts our life, using a globe that shows the distribution of global warming. The AR view helps teenagers understand how global warming has become increasingly severe in the last century.
The second room focuses on the main cause of global warming, global carbon emissions. The big table in this room shows how global transportation and factory system contributes to global warming. The AR view helps teenagers see the data and how these factors cause global warming.
The third room is dedicated to what we can do to fight against climate change. The big painting on the wall shows a renewable energy factory, and teenagers can use the iPad to turn on solar panels and wind turbines to see how renewable energy is generated and how it can slow down global warming.
The augmented reality experience gives teenagers a magical experience to learn and a dynamic and emerging way to interact with the younger generation. It works as a metaphor by using a hidden visual way to reveal the climate crisis that people normally don’t notice in daily life.
