Great Wolf Lodge is North America’s largest family of indoor water park resorts. Their mission is to foster family togetherness through fun and adventure in a safe environment. The company recently completed an extensive transformation of its woodland characters and is bringing them to life in new and exciting ways.
Building on this new content strategy, BRC created a location-based signature attraction for Great Wolf’s next generation of Lodges called The Legend of Luna—a lovely fable about an adolescent wolf who longs to find her place in the world. The first of its kind, The Legend of Luna opens new possibilities for the themed entertainment industry, turning otherwise ordinary, pass-through public spaces, like a hotel lobby, into immersive, storied places of wonder and magic.
On the surface, the Grand Lobby is designed in the tradition of the grand lodges of the national parks system. But every evening just before bedtime, families are invited to gather around the fireplace and watch as the Lobby is transformed into a multi-sensory immersive storytelling space.
To maximize a sense of wonder, technology is hidden from public view: Projection mapping animates the 30-foot-tall stone fireplace; A static painting above the mantle becomes an unexpected screen showing the animated film; Hotel chandeliers conceal 18,000 control channels to create 1.8 million colors and lifelike flames; Previously ordinary LED screens that surround the room come to life, deepening the immersive storytelling experience. Other technical effects include the use of lasers, fire effects, smoke effects, and snow.
This technology works in service of a heartfelt fable about Luna, a wolf who knows she is different from the other wolves. With a little help from her Grandmother’s patience and love, Luna finds the courage to be herself and sing her own song. She discovers that each of us is unique, underlining an important lesson: each of our differences make the pack stronger.
When not in show-mode, the lobby’s special effects infrastructure allows the space to adapt to seasons and special events, all with the click of a mouse.
