Miaoli Impressions: A Mountain City with Slow Fish
Miaoli's coastline stretches 50 kilometers and includes 11 fishing ports. Yet, in 2019, Miaoli County's fish catch was just 749 tonnes, representing only 0.1% of Taiwan’s total catch. It is the coastal area with the lowest fish catch in Taiwan. Unlike Donggang’s Bluefin Tuna Festival, Chenggong’s Sailfish Festival, and Hualien’s Ocean Sunfish Festival, Miaoli does not have a prominent seafood reputation. Many wonder why Miaoli, with such minimal fish catches, promotes Slow Fish. The elements of the sea—fish, ports, coasts, seamen, coastal villages, seaside streets, and sea views—form the fabric of the Miaoli Slow Fish Coast. These elements define the five core aspects of the Miaoli Slow Fish Ocean: blue ocean protection, blue education for sustainable oceans, blue organizations dedicated to preserving local cuisine, traditional fishing methods reflecting fishermen’s wisdom, and blue tourism that highlights coastal charm.
