What does ‘macroeconomic growth and stability’ mean? To most people, not much. But it is the central mission of the IMF, and demystifying our role in the global economy isn’t always a straightforward task.

That’s why we created a new video series, Success Stories, based on a simple premise: Regular people explaining in their own words how their lives have been transformed by their country’s economic turnaround.

In these video shorts our subjects share their own lived experience in what economic success looks like for a country where the IMF has made real impact. Produced in-house together with freelancers in the field, we find the true stories that remind the world that while our work is sometimes abstract, in the end, it is very much about fostering a world wherein people are free to share in an economy that works for everyone.

For our inaugural series, we chose two countries in which the IMF had a direct role in bringing a struggling economy the support it needed to thrive:

Jamaica: Perhaps no place represents the resilience of Jamaica's economy more than the Kingston Night Market - a place for artists and entrepreneurs of all stripes. When tourism to Jamaica paused in 2020, the market closed, and the country, its businesses, and its people needed financial support to bridge the gap. IMF emergency financing helped Jamaica support its economy and people.

Zambia: When Zambia declared free education for all children in 2022, it needed the right partnerships to support schools like Matipula. The IMF's $1.3 billion support for Zambia is helping to meet a much-needed increase in spending on education and other sectors.
