In 2024, the London-based duo O. released their debut album "WeirdOs" on the Speedy Wunderground label. Ahead of the release, they enlisted Blackstar Agency to conceptualise, design, and deliver artwork that would embody the playful and experimental spirit of their music.
The album "WeirdOs" features sounds that are experimental and leftfield, yet playful and tongue-in-cheek. Recognizing the handcrafted nature of the band’s music, Blackstar Agency embarked on initial consultations to develop a unique concept. The artwork and packaging took the form of a real-life cereal called "WeirdOs," playing on the idea of the music being something you had to "taste" and nodding to both the band’s name and a well-known cereal brand.
The next step involved principle photography, directed and produced in-house at Blackstar Agency’s London studios. The band was photographed in various scenarios enjoying the fictional cereal, reminiscent of vintage food commercials. These images were then digitally transformed into initial artwork designs, characterized by bright colors, high contrast edits, and bold marketing claims.
During the process, it became clear that while the digital designs were captivating, the handcrafted feel of the band’s music was missing. To address this, Blackstar Agency collaborated with the duo to create back covers and single artwork using mixes of paint, glue, and alphabet-shaped cereal. This approach linked the packaging information to the real-life cereal world and added an organic touch, vital for a primarily digital audience.
After multiple rounds of feedback, it was evident that the artwork needed to feel real and tangible. Blackstar Agency brought the approved designs into a 3D environment, creating a sense of a genuine product. This included developing packaging nets for a limited run of actual cereal boxes, used by the band for promotional photography.
The project was a dramatic success, thrilling both the band and clients. The artwork received favorable press and significantly contributed to the impact of the band's debut album. Blackstar Agency's innovative approach in bridging digital and physical realms made "WeirdOs" a standout project, demonstrating their exceptional capability in music marketing and design.
