Taiwan's train system has had a significant impact on local development. The construction of Fugang Railway Station in Taoyuan City in 1929 led to the development of the neighboring towns, and later, with Fugang Depot’s building, the largest train maintenance base in Taiwan, Fugang became an important town of railroad culture.
“Fugang Railway Art Life Festival” is held by Department of Cultural Affairs every two years since 2020. In previous years, artists were invited to create works on-site, bringing together local residents through landscape art, installation art, music performances, and parades, fostering a sense of identity and connection to their living spaces.
This year, the festival focused on collective memory of the railway and created a distinctive railway arts exhibition and performance that highlights the unique characteristics of Fugang. The event also integrates surrounding tourist attractions, connecting them with themed tours, and consolidating local resources to stimulate the economy in Fugang and its neighboring areas through the festival, hoping to restore the prosperity of the past to Fugang.
Local characteristics and culture are integrated through this event, making it a significant annual event for railway culture. The festival this year, which lasted for nine days, successfully attracted nearly 100,000 participants to revitalize the town. It helps Fugang to achieve the dual goal of cultural heritage preservation and local sustainable development.
