The "Gaia Hypothesis," proposed by the ecologist James Lovelock, suggests that Earth is a self-regulating complex system, where the biosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere interact to maintain the planet’s life-supporting system. However, human activities are disrupting this delicate balance, leading to ecological crises such as climate change and the loss of biodiversity.
The artwork involves physical feature extraction, model creation, data transformation, and scenario prediction using the "Forest area (% of land area)" dataset from the World Bank's open database. It projects the global forest area changes from 1990 to 2060. Through a cross-media sensory experience, the artist invites the audience to reflect on the irreconcilable challenges between human activities and ecological crises. In a pre-set future scenario, when a viewer touches the "Earth's surface," the installation creates a particle-shattering effect, symbolizing the destructive impact of human activity on the Earth's ecosystem. This touch is not just a physical interaction but also a symbolic farewell.
The artist hopes this work will encourage a re-examination of the relationship between humans and nature, urging action to save the fragile life-supporting system.
