From the Roadside to the Future is a deep dive into Googie architecture, a defining visual style of mid-century Los Angeles. This book documents Googie’s cultural and architectural significance, tracing its origins in roadside signage, futuristic aesthetics, and space-age optimism. Inspired by these bold visual forms, I developed the Googie Typeface Family, a collection of six typefaces that reinterpret Googie culture, Mid-century aesthetics, and Space Age motifs into contemporary letterforms. Each typeface tells a unique design story, and through curated showcases, I explore its application across various platforms and design contexts.
Beyond being a typographic study, this book is an interactive, three-dimensional experience. The cover design forms a layered typographic skyline, built from the letter “G” in my six typefaces. Each letter is magnetically detachable, allowing readers to physically manipulate the typography, revealing hidden Googie signage elements beneath. This hands-on interaction transforms the book into an immersive journey, where typography becomes an architectural and sensory exploration.
