Produced for the Freedom Rides Museum in Montgomery, Alabama, the Freedom Riders VR Experience is a 360-degree video journey into the heart of the Civil Rights movement that blends together archival imagery, motion graphics, and powerful audio to create an immersive story that honors those who participated in this movement. Relative Scale produced the film, provided ten VR headsets and travel cases, and trained museum staff so they can take the VR experience to schools and other venues.
The goals of the project include:
1. Connect outside-the-museum audiences to the story of the Freedom Riders.
2. Provide an educational experience that fosters empathy and historical awareness.
3. Reinforce Montgomery’s pivotal role in the Civil Rights movement.
4. Drive an increase in visitors to the Freedom Rides Museum.
The experience blends documentary realism with abstract storytelling and is structured as a three-act narrative:
1. Journey to Montgomery
2. Encounter with the violent mob
3. Retreat and reflection
By merging historical storytelling with 360-degree VR headset technology, this media experience transforms museum engagements into personal encounters with history. This project not only helps preserve the legacy of the Freedom Riders, but also reinforces the ongoing relevance of their struggle for justice and equality.
