About The Entry
2025 Taoyuan Three Realms Lord (The Taoyuan Sangieia) Cultural Festival is distinguished by Taiwan’s only rotating host system and by the presence of as many as 21 Sanjieye temples—the highest number nationwide. This belief system is deeply intertwined with the development of the Taoyuan Irrigation Ponds and Canals System, which laid the foundation for its exceptional status in both religious life and Hakka culture.
The worship of Sangieia(samˊgie ia ˇ) was introduced during the Qing dynasty by Hakka settlers and gradually evolved into a village-based shared faith network. At its core lies the guiding ethos of “Revering Heaven, Cherishing the Land, and Protecting Water.” Like a cultural bond, this belief connects Hakka, Plains Indigenous, and Minnan communities, inspiring resonance across villages, regions, and generations.
More than a testament to ethnic integration and the everyday nature of faith, the festival also rejuvenates tradition for younger generations, inviting participation from all age groups. Together, communities embody the Hakka people’s deep respect and gratitude toward natural resources, passing these values down through time. Through rituals, processions, creative performances, and immersive experiences, the festival brings Taiwan’s living cultural heritage vividly to life—establishing the Taoyuan Sangieia Cultural Festival as a uniquely distinctive Hakka cultural celebration of Taoyuan.
