“Seagulls Encounter with Qingdao” is an immersive digital animation project that transforms a seasonal urban phenomenon into a globally engaging cultural narrative. Inspired by the winter tradition of feeding seagulls along Qingdao’s iconic Zhanqiao Pier, the film reinterprets the harmonious relationship between people and nature through advanced visual technology, positioning the seagull as a symbolic cultural ambassador of the city.
Grounded in ecological research, the creative team identified the red-billed gull, herring gull, black-tailed gull, and great black-backed gull as the primary local species. The red-billed gull was selected as the prototype for the female character, its vivid red beak echoing poetic femininity, while the larger herring gull became the male figure, representing strength and guardianship. This dual-character narrative humanizes wildlife while preserving biological authenticity, creating an emotional storyline of encounter, connection, and companionship.
Technically, the project demonstrates meticulous digital craftsmanship. Each seagull was constructed with 1.8 million strands of simulated feathers, while the historic pavilion at the pier was modeled with over 3 million distinct surfaces. Using CGI production pipelines, Cinema 4D’s hair system, and Octane rendering, the team conducted extensive real-time rendering tests to achieve a delicate balance between physical realism and artistic stylization. The result is a vivid, dynamic visual experience that conveys softness, motion, and lifelike detail.
Innovation is defined by the integration of AR digital performance and large-scale naked-eye 3D display. Through camera tracking and environmental data capture, virtual seagulls seamlessly interact with real urban space. Simultaneously, a landmark giant screen presents a stereoscopic narrative visible without wearable devices, dissolving boundaries between digital illusion and physical architecture.
By anchoring storytelling to a recognizable city landmark and embedding emotion within technological spectacle, the project establishes a new communication model for digital cultural tourism—where technology serves content, and content amplifies cultural identity. With over one billion global impressions, the project demonstrates both artistic excellence and measurable impact, elevating a local winter tradition into an internationally resonant visual icon.
