About The Entry

The transit industry is facing a critical loss of unwritten expertise as veteran technicians retire. These experts take decades of intuitive troubleshooting experience with them when they leave. New hires are often proficient at following linear checklists but they struggle when faced with complex, non-linear system failures. The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) needed a training solution that moved beyond basic competency to build true cognitive resilience. The goal was to teach technicians how to think through a problem rather than just what to fix.
In collaboration with the CTA, we developed a high-fidelity 3D simulation designed to bridge this experience gap. Rather than a traditional tutorial, the experience functions as a diagnostic scavenger hunt within a digital twin of the transit environment. Using a virtual notepad, learners must actively document evidence in a ‘mental inventory’ to manage their cognitive load and to practice the art of failure. This mirrors the real-world resilient mental frameworks used by senior experts to organize complex technical data.
The simulation replaces rote memorization with resource navigation. To solve a fault, players must hunt for under-utilized real-world resources like IP address registries for camera feeds or physical reference manuals. We utilized micro-reward loops by awarding virtual wrenches upon solving puzzle segments. This provides immediate feedback without breaking the immersion. By integrating supervisor hints and technical documentation directly into the gameplay, we taught learners that knowing where to find the data is more valuable than simply knowing the answer.
By reframing failure as a data point instead of an endpoint, the game mechanics build a high tolerance for the frustrations inherent in troubleshooting. The 3D environment provides a consequence-free space to get dirty and test theories against live mechanical logic. The result is a new generation of technicians who do not just follow a process. Instead, they practice the troubleshooting skills required to solve the unpredictable challenges of a modern transit system.
