About The Entry
After the Tide is a sound-driven immersive moving-image installation focusing on young adults born between 1995 and 2008 in mainland Chinese cities. Growing up amid rapid economic expansion, intense educational competition, and increasingly fixed narratives of success, they were encouraged to believe that effort would lead to upward mobility and stability. Since 2020, however, slower growth, tighter job markets, shrinking entrepreneurial opportunities, and less predictable career paths have unsettled these expectations.
The work uses the tide as a metaphor for this shift from a “rising tide” to a “receding tide.” The receding tide does not mean that pressure disappears. Social expectations and established standards of success remain, even as the routes once believed to lead toward them narrow. The installation translates this contradiction into an embodied audiovisual experience.
Text fragments, particles, flowing-water imagery, social opinions, radio broadcasts, beach waves, and heartbeat sounds form a responsive environment. Sound data controls the movement, density, rhythm, accumulation, and dissolution of the visual field. As the tide rises, competitive language and external standards spread through the space, surrounding the viewer and compressing bodily perception. The viewer is not positioned outside the image, but placed within the system of pressure.
As the tide retreats, accumulated information fragments, disperses, and gradually loses its dominance. The viewer’s bodily outline, breathing, and quieter personal thoughts re-emerge. This is not an escape from social reality, but a temporary interval in which individuals can distinguish imposed expectations from personal desires, reconsider progress, stability, and success, and rebuild their sense of subjectivity.
Through this recurring cycle, After the Tide transforms economic and social change into a bodily experience. It explores how collective narratives shape life choices and self-understanding, and how individuals may reorient themselves when familiar promises of upward mobility begin to recede.
