About The Entry
The 2026 Beigang Lantern Festival, “Tidal Light,” reimagines a traditional lantern festival as a citywide cultural experience, transforming Beigang’s centuries-old heritage, religious traditions, and historic streets into an immersive exhibition illuminated by light.
The concept combines two defining forces of Beigang: “Tide” represents the continuous flow of pilgrims, people, traditions, and cultural influences that have shaped the town for generations, while “Light” symbolizes faith, collective memory, vitality, and renewal. Together, they express the curatorial belief that culture is not merely preserved—it continues to live, evolve, and inspire.
Centered around the iconic Beigang Chaotian Temple, the festival connects the Waterworks Cultural Park, Dafu Theater, Beigang Sugar Factory, historic streets, and other significant heritage locations. Ten cultural heritage sites and six thematic lighting zones form an interconnected nighttime route, turning the town itself into an open-air cultural exhibition.
Rather than simply viewing lantern displays, visitors explore Beigang by walking through temples, historic architecture, traditional neighborhoods, artistic installations, and illuminated public spaces. Local cultural elements—including lanterns, temple colors, incense rituals, religious symbolism, and historic streetscapes—are reinterpreted through contemporary lighting design, installations, and immersive environments.
The festival also integrates its opening ceremony, the “Tidal Light Night” performance program, and local cultural experiences, creating a dialogue between heritage and contemporary creativity.
More than a seasonal celebration, “Tidal Light” serves as a platform for cultural placemaking, heritage interpretation, and destination branding. Light draws people into Beigang, while exploration allows them to rediscover its faith, architecture, industries, communities, and living traditions.
The 2026 Beigang Lantern Festival demonstrates how cultural heritage can remain authentic while becoming relevant to a new generation.
As waves of light flow through Beigang, centuries of culture illuminate the city once again—transforming heritage into a living force for the future.
