Waasegiizhig Nanaandawe’iyewigamig (WNHAC) is an Indigenous health centre based in Kenora, Ontario, Canada, with facilities and programs serving Anishinaabe and Métis people in the region.
Argyle developed a strategic plan for WNHAC, rebranded the organization and has provided many communications support services including the design of an annual report.
For the 2019-20 annual report we paid homage to the geographic area that WNHAC serves—an area defined by majestic Canadian Shield rock formations, lush boreal forests and thousands of connected lakes. Indigenous people value a close, sacred connection to the land and have inhabited the area before recorded history. A range of larger photos of the northern Ontario landscape signified Indigenous ties to the land. This was balanced with smaller photos—supplied by WHNAC—showcasing community events, cultural activities and opportunities WHNAC offers for health and well-being in their communities.
The colour bars used as a design accent throughout the report were inspired by the colour bands on WNHAC’s ceremonial drum—an important and recognizable cultural object within the organization. The community sections and graphs were colour-coded by area and incorporate the colours of the drum bands to represent the connection and cohesion of the communities served. We developed the “At A Glance” donut graphs using WHNAC brand standard colour palettes. The Operational Structure is based on a traditional Indigenous Medicine Wheel—a representation of the Four Directions that symbolize the people of the world, dimensions of health and the cycles of life.
We applied brand standards that we developed for WHNAC. We integrated appropriate white space, paragraph and line spacing to make the report reader-friendly. We wanted it to be visually light and friendly, but also professional to cater to an audience that includes community members, funders and government.
