This unique exhibition on the life and work of Beethoven went beyond a mere historical display of artefacts. Instead, it aimed to simultaneously deepen our understanding of Beethoven’s life and work, exploring his enduring impact through an associative display of artworks. Functionally, it was imperative that the architecture not only provide a cohesive backdrop for the artworks on show, but that it also convey the varied atmospheric moods associated with the themes of Beethoven’s life. The innovative approach to materiality, focus on sensory experiences and response to site were paramount.

The materiality was innovative both in its environmental and experiential focus. The main supporting structure behind all exhibition walls was a rented re-usable rigging system allowing for lower impact materials to be used for finishes. Fabrics and pre-finished wall panels were employed, keeping the use of paint to a minimum. All showcases were re-used. Materials that activate the senses created a holistic experience, from mirrored flooring to the inclusion of soundscapes and haptic surfaces. The creation of ‘sound tunnels’ that alter one’s auditory experience from one space to the next, provided acoustic and visual separation. These sensory experiences were supplemented with subtle ramps that give viewers of all ages and abilities different perspectives of artworks throughout the show.

The contrast between the highly contemporary architecture inside the monumental KHM building removed visitors from the world of KHM and placed them inside that of Beethoven, before slowly revealing the building back to them. This juxtaposition allowed for new readings of the KHM building and the temporary architecture, mirroring the exhibition content which sets old masters’ work in direct dialog with contemporary art to create a new reading of Beethoven.

The design aims to be radical yet poetic; monumental and intimate at the same time – a tribute to Beethoven and his legacy.
