Satori Marketing’s work with Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) started out as a relatively straightforward problem-solution project: Their Project Brays initiative had left communities feeling frustrated and unheard due to a lack of communication and outdated materials. We had stepped in to course correct their strategy, starting with a deep dive into their audience. The results of our research showed that one demographic in particular had an active interest in the work of HCFCD, yet they were being overlooked completely: its youngest residents. We knew that through our work with HCFCD, we had a clear opportunity to provide much-needed peace of mind and comfort to a young audience filled with uncertainty about their safety. To create something truly unique and geared toward the community’s youngest residents, we tapped into features and landmarks they’d easily recognize from their surroundings. Project Brays wanted to promote its ongoing work to make the community safer from flooding. That narrative deserved its own moment, so we created various puzzles of differing difficulty levels to appeal to kids of all ages as we moved the story forward. Every element of the Activity Book was designed to activate the overall brand strategy. Messaging highlighted an upbeat, inviting personality spearheaded by our campaign hero: Bridgette the Bridge, a personification of the Southmore Bridge. Key takeaways and insights were translated into kid-friendly language to demonstrate the importance of the construction and what it’d mean for their families. We also made it our mission to make community meeting attendance as accessible as possible for residents, so we made the activity books available as edutainment for children as their parents listened to the HCFCD presentations. Along the way, we ordered 5K+ activity books, placed separate orders for HCFCD staff and employees at their request. Project Brays Activity Book took an often-scary subject and turned it into a series of activities and puzzles fueled by preparedness, knowledge and, of course, entertainment. In doing so, it rebranded the conversation surrounding Harris County Flood Control District and made the topic of flooding less intimidating in the minds of our youngest residents.
