How do we effectively communicate what is meant to be the safest behavior for IMF personnel, when that audience numbers in the thousands and comes from nearly 190 countries, each with their own cultural customs? It’s a challenge the IMF Design team faces daily. And just prior to COVID-19 officially being declared a pandemic, our designers were tasked with a campaign to encourage safety among that diverse staff. Our designers conceived and drew up a custom-illustrated poster series with clear, concise instructional copy and coupled it with images of human figures demonstrating ideal office behavior. Together, the text and imagery quickly and effectively communicate the most reliable health safety recommendations and went a long way toward keeping IMF staff safe, healthy, and informed. This visual strategy would be extended to our Intranet sites, articles, and email and become an integral part of the IMF’s visual communications to help staff stay aware without the need for their undivided attention.
