For decades, the IMF has held two annual conferences on the most pressing economic issues of the day. In recent years our Annual and Spring Meetings see an attendance of roughly 15,000 central bankers, ministers of finance and development, parliamentarians, private-sector executives, representatives from civil society organizations, and academics. Issues discussed are of a global concern, including the world economic outlook, poverty eradication, economic development, and aid effectiveness. In a non-pandemic year, the Meetings are each a unique logistical challenge, but in March of 2020, with COVID-19 rapidly becoming a global public health concern, the decision was made to hold our 2020 Annual Meetings as an online-only event. In the space of only a few months, the IMF pivoted from a closed, high-level summit of dignitaries and academics and transformed into a public virtual experience across our digital platforms. We used every digital tool in our portfolio to make one of the world’s largest economic summits a seamless experience across social media and streaming video.
