Litter Lane is designed as an all-new youth educational experience focused on addressing the community's increasing need to understand how their individual and collective trash disposal actions affect the world around us. This all-new exhibit is a unique and immersive education experience that fosters exploration and stewardship of our community. Litter Lane engages students with a litter scavenger hunt along a heavily traveled trail at Roper Mountain Science Center in Greenville South Carolina. Five custom-made and manufactured fiberglass pieces of “litter” line the trail for students to find. When a piece of “litter” is found, a QR code plays a short 50-second cartoon video about the cause, effect, and solution to that piece of litter. This is a solution-based hands-on learning experience customized for youth between grade levels 1 through 8 and uses good social norms to shape positive behavior. Each video gives specific, attainable, and clear actions and directions that students can easily follow. This exhibit showcases how just one person’s actions matter. In the face of the larger global littering issue, it is easy to believe just one bottle or candy wrapper does not matter, this exhibit is designed to show students that they do.
