Carbon mineralization is the process by which carbon dioxide becomes a solid mineral, such as a carbonate. It is a chemical reaction that happens when certain rocks are exposed to carbon dioxide. The biggest advantage of carbon mineralization is that the carbon cannot escape back to the atmosphere. Removing CO2 from the atmosphere is extremely vital if we are to avoid the most damaging effects of climate change.
Across ADNOC, we're exploring innovative ways to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. One solution involves rocks called peridotites that are found across the U.A.E. When exposed to water elements inside, these rocks react with CO2 to mineralize it. This occurs naturally over decades; but we're turning decades into months in Fujairah by using technology from 44.01, which is the molecular mass of CO.
After capturing CO2 from the air, we'll combine it with seawater and inject it deep underground. Here we expect the rocks to solidify the CO2 forever. Using MASDAR's clean energy, this project will be the region's first carbon-negative project. This technology could one day eliminate millions of tons of CO2 from the atmosphere and help the U.A.E achieve its net-zero by 2050’s strategic initiative.
