Welcome to Book 1 of IEEE-USA E-BOOKS’ new series on Famous Women Engineers in History. Now that we have finished up our award-winning, 24-book series on Women in Engineering—that intimately explored the lives and careers of modern-day women engineers in their own words—we will take a step back into history.
The history of women in engineering predates the development of the profession of engineering. Before engineering was recognized as a formal profession, women with engineering skills often sought recognition as inventors. They opened the way for others in engineering through their courage, creativity, perseverance and achievement. The long list of role models is a reservoir of inspiration.
These extraordinary women engineers helped shape and reshape the world. Each one made remarkable achievements during their lifetime, that still have an impact on the systems and technology we use today.
