The history of women in engineering predates the development of the
engineering profession. Before engineering was recognized as a formal
profession, women with engineering skills often sought recognition
as inventors. These women opened the way for others in engineering
through their courage, creativity, perseverance and achievement. These
extraordinary women engineers helped shape and reshape the world.
Each one made remarkable achievements during their lifetime, that still
have an impact on the systems and technology we use today.
In Book 2 of this series: Trailblazer Edith Clarke playing a critical role in developing the electric grid during its period of massive growth and expansion. She helped to ensure that the transmission system remained reliable and stable. Clarke also laid the foundation for smart grids; and the electrical system envisioned for the future. As a woman, at a time when women were blocked from engineering, Clarke's contributions are even more impressive.
