Tobacco Stops With Me (a program of the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust) is a public health intervention that provides efficient, emotional and highly recognizable tobacco prevention messages for Oklahomans to rally around.
In Oklahoma, 1 in 5 kids suffers from secondhand smoke at home, and children are rarely able to advocate for themselves. To educate Oklahomans on this important issue, a statewide campaign, titled “It’s Like They’re Smoking” was launched.
The shocking creative concept imagines a world where children speak about their secondhand smoke exposure as though it were a personal smoking addiction. The message gives children a voice to speak out against their harmful situations and push adults and policymakers to create real change against secondhand smoke.
The campaign’s video assets also educate Oklahomans on secondhand smoke-related health complications that can last a lifetime, including bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma attacks, and an increased risk of addiction for exposed children. These issues are highlighted alongside policy issues. In Oklahoma, it’s still legal to smoke in a car when children are present. Just half of one cigarette smoked in a vehicle can produce secondhand smoke levels 10 times higher than the hazardous limits set by the Environmental Protection Agency. Even with the windows cracked or rolled down, toxin and carbon monoxide levels are still dangerously high.
The It’s Like They’re Smoking video assets engage audiences with unique and jarring creative, effectively spreading messaging about the dangers secondhand smoke poses to kids. By educating and creating awareness about the issue, It’s Like They’re Smoking video invite audiences to take action and protect those around them through advocacy and exposure precautions.
