Pescadores Guarded by The Lighthouse

The "Pescadores Guarded by The Lighthouse" exhibition, in collaboration with the Penghu County Government Cultural Affairs Bureau, Penghu County Cultural Foundation, and Play Design Lab, supported by the Ministry of Culture, is a standout feature at the 2023 Taiwan Cultural Expo. Running from September 22nd to October 1st at the Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab (C-Lab) in Taipei, this exhibition offers a deep dive into the captivating world of Penghu's lighthouses.

Penghu, an archipelago of ninety islands, proudly claims the highest number of lighthouses in Taiwan. Each lighthouse carries its unique historical narrative and purpose. "Pescadores Guarded by The Lighthouse" symbolizes the voyage every young designer undertakes, akin to a navigator. Much like how lighthouses guide ships safely through treacherous waters, designers must navigate their own creative challenges to uncover beauty.

The exhibition space at C-Lab is thoughtfully divided into the "Dark Room" and "Light Room," presenting immersive experiences and intellectual journeys through Penghu's maritime history. Visitors can marvel at the exquisite "West Islet Floating Lighthouse Stone Sculptures," dating back 250 years, transported from Penghu. Additionally, they can savor a 12-meter-long three-dimensional scroll painting and embark on a sensory adventure featuring fragrances crafted by perfumer Tang Hui-Wen and ambient sounds by Echoism Studio, invoking the very essence and mystique of the sea.

The "Pescadores Guarded by The Lighthouse" exhibition serves not only as an introduction to Penghu's lighthouses but also as an invitation for visitors to discover their own inner light. As curator Lin, MingHui said: "Please Immerse yourself in the mist of the sea and wait for the appearance of mythical creatures. Don't be afraid, the lighthouse will shine one by one to illuminate your surroundings." It showcases the profound cultural and historical significance of these maritime sentinels, offering a glimpse into the enduring spirit of Penghu's islanders and the designers who, much like lighthouses, illuminate the path to beauty through resilience.
