The" Ensemble Playing" is a multi-screen interactive art installation, which consists of six ultra-thin edge-to-edge screens and dynamic mechanical components, intricately controlled through an iPad. Inspired by the online concert "Together at Home," that connects people who are isolated at home together, and provide them mutual inspiration and confidence to get through the COVID-19 quarantine through the medium of art. Featuring the elegant ladies from the "Court Ladies in Tang Palace" as characters, the" Ensemble Playing" portrays them facing various challenges during their performance with unwavering composure. The designers aim to convey a spirit of resilience, akin to a mountain standing firm amidst rain and wind, which encourages the audience to maintain an optimistic and positive mindset in the ever-changing modern world.
This work comprises six chapters, each one symbolizes a kind of challenge that individuals may encounter in life. "Water" symbolizes environment changes and sustainable development, with traditional Chinese patterns and calligraphy on the large fish tank showcasing Eastern aesthetics as to emphasize eastern culture pays much attention to environment protection and sustainability. "Melon" is a social media slang indicating potential revelations of truths."Wind" as the societal or cultural trends, and expressions like "blow wind" and "follow the wind" reflect behaviors on social media, expressing opinions or following popular topics. "Plug-in" in Chapter 4, "Electric", symbolizes the fast-paced lifestyle and pressure from the rapid development of technology. "Fire" manifests the negative impact of fame and fortune. "Smoke" represents confusion and distress, while the fluorescent strips on the ladies remind us to stay vigilant, seek solutions, and not be misled by the fog. This creative concept deeply reflects the intricate interplay of multiple elements in contemporary society, which prompts contemplation on attitudes toward the environment, culture, and life.
