'Maestro,' an interactive installation at the Museum of Sydney's "The People's House: 50 Years of Sydney Opera House" exhibition, offers visitors a unique opportunity to step into the shoes of a conductor. This immersive experience is not just about observing; it's about actively participating and influencing a generative soundscape and visual display with one's own movements.

Designed to celebrate the Sydney Opera House's 50th anniversary, 'Maestro' engages participants by making them the centerpiece of a musical and visual performance. Upon entering the 'Maestro’ experience, visitors step into a zone where their physical movements—deliberate gestures or spontaneous dances—directly affect the music and imagery around them. This innovative use of motion-capture technology transforms the visitor from a passive viewer into an active performer, blurring the lines between audience and artist.

The installation is divided into different interactive zones, each responding to specific aspects of their movement. In the Impressionist zones in the back, the velocity of movement controls the volume of sound, allowing for a playful exploration of motion and its auditory outcomes. The Maestro zones upfront further divide the experience into areas focused on melody, harmony, and rhythm. Here, visitors can manipulate various musical elements by altering the position and speed of their movements, effectively composing music through their gestures.

This direct, physical interaction with the music and visuals provides a profound sense of connection and creativity as visitors see, hear, and feel the immediate impact of their actions on the environment. 'Maestro' not only demystifies the process of music making but also invites participants to explore their creative potential in a setting that is both educational and entertaining.

By enabling people to commune with the performative spirit of the Sydney Opera House, 'Maestro' serves as a bridge between technology, art, and human expression. It represents a significant step forward in interactive design, offering a transformative experience that encourages visitors to engage with and think about music and performance in new and exciting ways.
