After a three-year break, the F.A.T. Ice Race made its long-awaited comeback to Zell am See in 2024. It was the perfect setting to celebrate the 50th birthday of the Golf together with numerous motorsport fans. At the same time, it served as the ideal stage for the unveiling of the new Golf model, which was presented to the public for the first time at this event.

On the previous evening, Volkswagen hosted a dinner with invited guests at the nearby Areit-Alm. Among the highlights were a band playing a song composed specifically for Volkswagen and a custom-made illuminated ice wall. Positioned in front of this striking backdrop was the attention-grabbing camouflaged Golf R.

During the Ice Race event itself, another ice wall featuring the "50 Jahre Golf" (50 Years of Golf) slogan was showcased. The new Golf 8 PA was prominently displayed on a podium in front of it, flanked by camouflaged Golfs, including the Golf R that made its debut at CES in Las Vegas earlier in January, creating a unique photo opportunity.

To properly celebrate a birthday, what's essential? You guessed it – a cake. But when it comes to Volkswagen, ordinary just won't do. Thus, a massive cake measuring 1m by 1m was crafted by a local bakery and joyfully shared among the attendees.

A standout moment of Volkswagen's presence at the Ice Race was the show drive. Two camouflaged Golfs, piloted by celebrities Hans-Joachim Stuck and Johan Kristofferson, circled the ice to the beat of a specially composed Golf birthday song. The extraordinary vehicles were accentuated with powder, painting the track in vibrant hues as they sped by. Adding to the spectacle, race drones flew through the colorful clouds, capturing breathtaking aerial footage. All elements combined managed to create a memorable and remarkable photo moment, one that truly stood out among all the other drives.
