This online exhibition extends the physical exhibitions of the National Palace Museum by combining two exhibitions: “Treasures from the Bibliotheca Apostolica Vaticana” and “Rare Books from the Ming and Qing Imperial Libraries”. This marks the first simultaneous display of rare ancient texts from both Western and Chinese historical and cultural contexts in the National Palace Museum, aiming to deepen the audience's understanding of the similarities and differences between the Vatican and Chinese royal book collections. The National Palace Museum commissioned Panosensing to transform this exhibition into an online version. We utilized panoramic photography, user-friendly interface and well-designed information window to present the exhibition in a digital format.
We have managed to conquer many challenges to bring this exhibition online, including :
1. Combine the parallel exhibitions
To provide the best experience of this set of parallel exhibitions, we designed a user journey that offers multiple entry points, ensuring visitors understand the exhibition's structure and can choose their starting point.
2. Guide audience through the rich information
One of the biggest challenges in digitizing a physical exhibition is adapting information to an online-friendly format. For this set of rich information, we designed a search function for easy navigation, and a layered information structure of objects, which can provide 3 layers of object description, including the “Description”, “Object Detail” and “More to Read”.
3. Low-Light Conditions and Glass Reflections
With our precision and expertise in photography techniques, we have overcome the challenge of capturing high-quality panoramic photographs in the museum’s standard dim lighting environment. Our technology allows for clear visualization in areas illuminated by spotlights and even in dark shadows.
The online exhibition serves as a platform to showcase this historically collaborative exhibition without the limitations of time and space. The user-friendly and easy-to-navigate interface can reach a wider audience for the museum, and with planned future educational initiatives, this exhibition will also serve as a valuable resource to foster a deeper appreciation of art and culture.
