“Whiteout” takes the Quincy neighborhood in Boston as an experiment, revolutionizing the city’s relationship with snow, and reimagining this abundant natural resource as a driving force for community empowerment and sustainable energy generation through large-scale connected infrastructure.
1. Challenge: Boston's current snow removal practices are costly, environmentally damaging, and exacerbate inequities in energy distribution and climate resilience.
2. Solution: Whiteout transforms this abundant natural resource into a driving force for community empowerment and sustainable energy generation.
3. Key Innovations:
- Capture and Store: Strategically located collection points and insulated storage facilities, integrated with existing transportation infrastructure, maximize snow harvesting potential with minimal cost.
- Generate Clean Energy: Snow powers cooling systems, provides supplemental heating, and contributes to the electrical grid.
- Enhance Public Realm: Snow becomes an interactive element in the community design, fostering education, playfulness, and wonder.
4. Innovative Landscape & Urban Design: Through existing mass transportation such as train tracks and Transportation Oriented Development(TOD), excessive snow is transported, stored, and transformed into energy through low-impact design, while open spaces in communities become activated. The design develops a phased distributional plan, where vulnerable neighborhoods are prioritized. Whiteout is more than an infrastructure; it's a paradigm shift. Transforming snow, Quincy becomes a model for sustainability and smart growth, demonstrating how cities thrive within their unique climates.
5. Environmental Justice & Community Impact:
- Lower energy costs: Particularly for vulnerable populations.
- Creates green jobs: Trains and employs community members in snow collection, maintenance, and energy generation..
- Educates and engages: Fosters a culture of environmental stewardship through public workshops, school programs, and community-led initiatives.
- Reduces pollution: Eliminates the need for diesel-fueled snow removal equipment.
6. Visual Communication:
Whiteout's visual identity is dynamic and engaging, using vibrant colors, 3D renderings, and animated multimedia presentations to illustrate the project's transformative impact. Interactive charts and maps highlight current inefficiencies and project benefits.
Whiteout is a bold vision for resilient communities, where snow is not a problem to be solved, but a resource to be celebrated. This project embodies creativity, innovation, and a deep commitment to community well-being.
