The Hagia Sophia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Istanbul, symbolizes the fusion of Christian and Islamic cultures. The History and Experience Museum, designed to encapsulate the monument's historical and symbolic life span, offers a unique historical and cultural experience, beginning with a 30-minute immersive show that vividly brings its 1700-year history to life.
Spread across 3200 m² and 13 halls, the museum tour is divided into three sections.
The first section explores the Byzantine period, highlighting the construction of the Hagia Sophia under key figures like Emperor Constantine and Justinian, and showcasing the architectural marvels, including the iconic dome. The impact of iconoclasm and the Crusades is also examined.
The second section delves into the Ottoman era, starting with Mehmed the Conqueror's transformation of the Hagia Sophia into a symbol of the empire. It highlights the contributions of sultans and the master architect Sinan, along with the artistic and architectural enhancements that have preserved the Hagia Sophia for centuries.
In the final exhibition hall, nearly 300 sacred artifacts present the Hagia Sophia’s history, from its origins as a church to its current role as a mosque. This immersive journey through the museum not only illuminates the Hagia Sophia's monumental history but also underscores its enduring significance.
After the museum visit, it’s time to experience the Hagia Sophia itself. With its iconic dome and magnificent mosaics, the Hagia Sophia is brought to life in new ways via a web-based Augmented Reality (AR) application. This cutting-edge technology allows visitors to explore hidden mosaic panels and previously inaccessible areas, offering a deeper understanding of the monument’s intricate details. Through their own devices, visitors can interact with detailed, historically accurate 3D models, revealing the rich heritage of the Hagia Sophia in an engaging and accessible manner, while simultaneously listening to the histories of the artifacts.
This innovative use of AR technology makes history more vivid and engaging for all. The project involved 58 digital design artists, 4 stage designers, 8 painters, 7 composers, 8 musicians, 4 historical consultants, and 4 art historians, setting a new standard for cultural preservation and education.
