The media art OTT platform VIDO hosted the 1st Media Art Challenge Festival in Seoul under the title "Beyond The Frame" from July 1 to July 31, 2024. This groundbreaking event showcased approximately 60 artworks by prominent Korean media artists across various indoor and outdoor billboards throughout Seoul. The festival aimed to broaden the reach of media art and provide citizens with a unique opportunity to experience and appreciate art in their daily lives.
The "Beyond The Frame" exhibition invited media artists to break free from traditional constraints and express their creativity and imagination in ways that transcended the limitations of conventional indoor and outdoor displays. The Media Art Challenge has become a cultural phenomenon where a template, created by the organizers, serves as a foundation for artists to present works that reflect their unique identities. These creations are then collectively viewed and evaluated, fostering a community of shared artistic exploration.
This festival went beyond being just a cultural challenge among media artists; it evolved into a media art campaign festival that utilized more than 90 Seoul's iconic large billboards in 10 spaces to bring art closer to the public, offering more people the opportunity to experience art firsthand. By transforming various city billboards into media canvases, this festival showcased the new possibilities of media art, redefining urban spaces as platforms for creative expression.
Through this festival, we aspire to see a diverse array of media art pieces from both domestic and international artists exhibited across cities, enabling a wider audience to engage with and enjoy media art. Moreover, we hope that this festival will continue to grow into a campaign-driven event that collaborates with various companies and institutions, not only in Seoul but in other cities as well, using the power of art to convey meaningful messages to the world.
This festival is expected to set a new standard in media art by redefining the role of urban billboards as artistic canvases, pushing the boundaries of what media art can achieve in the ever-evolving landscape of digital and public art.
