Implicit Space is an innovative design tool and guideline that rethinks how augmented and mixed reality (AR/MR) interactions affect social dynamics in public spaces. Built from a foundation of research and experimentation, this tool enables AR designers to visualize the social impact of body motions and behaviors through algorithm-driven simulations. By categorizing how users’ physical movements—such as hand gestures, walking, and prolonged presence—shape the perception of others around them, Implicit Space provides a groundbreaking approach to socially responsible AR design.

The project offers five key spatial categories: Claim Space, Indicate Space, Occupy Space, Own Space, and Define Space. These categories help visualize the temporary zones created by body motion and analyze how they affect others. For instance, Claim Space tracks hand movements, showing how AR content can dynamically adjust its layout to follow a user’s gestures. Occupy Space explores the impact of a user’s extended presence in a location, indicating how AR content can increase visibility and interactivity in response.

What makes Implicit Space unique is its ability to translate these social dynamics into actionable design guidelines. Designers can test their AR apps in a virtual environment populated with AI-driven characters, observing how body motion impacts others without them seeing the digital content. This real-time feedback fosters more considerate and respectful AR experiences, minimizing friction between users and their surroundings.

As AR and MR technologies evolve, Implicit Space offers a timely solution to the growing challenge of maintaining public etiquette in a world increasingly populated by digital interactions. It encourages AR designers to create immersive experiences that not only engage users but also respect the shared social environment, making it a pioneering tool for the future of human-centered AR design.
