Southington’s Town-wide Effort to Promote Success (STEPS) makes substance use prevention a priority in the Southington, CT community. Their coalition involves collaboration between students, parents, educators, media, clergy, law enforcement, businesses, and other community stakeholders.
In late 2023, the STEPS Youth Council had an idea to engage the community around positive family communication. Youth council members knew they could create positive change by educating families about this topic. In early 2024, Charge Ahead Marketing began working with the youth council to harness their input and create a campaign that resonated.
The centerpiece of the small-budget campaign is an interactive online quiz on the STEPS website. It’s intended for parents and kids to complete together. The quiz guides them through multiple-choice questions and short vignettes on substance use prevention, local impact data, and best practices around family communications. This provides strong context to discuss challenges and opportunities to improve substance use prevention
