ActiveAI is an interactive, web-based tutoring system designed to empower the next generation of learners with AI literacy - the skill to effectively and ethically interact and In a world where artificial intelligence shapes our industries, economies, and daily lives, the need for accessible, engaging AI education has never been greater. Despite recognizing the importance of AI literacy, many K-12 teachers lack sufficient knowledge in this area, creating significant barriers to teach K12 education. ActiveAI responds to this need by transforming complex technical concepts into user-friendly, scenario-driven learning experiences that resonate with K–12 students, regardless of their prior knowledge or resources.

Unlike many K-12 AI education efforts that focus predominantly on teaching students to develop AI systems, ActiveAI is uniquely designed for “AI users.” It centers on understanding and interacting with AI tools rather than coding them. This user-centric approach, combined with active learning strategies, personalized immediate feedback , and intelligent hinting, sets ActiveAI apart from static, lecture-based resources. Students learn how AI models make predictions, understand the concept of randomness, and gain a foundational understanding of AI’s capabilities and limitations.

ActiveAI outperforms conventional “tell-and-practice” methods by providing an engaging, hands-on learning experience that requires no advanced technical expertise from teachers or students. Through rigorously controlled classroom studies, ActiveAI has demonstrated significant improvements in students’ understanding of AI concepts and their self-reported confidence. Since its launch in 2024, the platform has been adopted by eight partner schools and currently supports over 5,000 active learners. Developed by a team of designers and learning scientists from Carnegie Mellon University and National Tsing Hua University, ActiveAI’s work has led to five peer-reviewed publications in leading academic conferences.

By making K–12 AI literacy education widely accessible, ActiveAI is shaping a new generation of innovators, critical thinkers, and responsible digital citizens. Students gain the skills and confidence to critically and ethically engage with AI technologies, understanding both their transformative potential and inherent limitations.
